Mulgrew making a difference in Argyll

ClubGolf Coach Developer John Mulgrew made the trip to Lochgilphead recently to help enlist more youngsters in the game by delivering valuable tuition advice.

PGA Master Professional Mulgrew, recognised as one of the country's very best coaches, met with Level 1 volunteers from Lochgilphead, Inveraray, Tarbert and Machrihanish golf clubs.

There, he provided tips on how to make sure coaching sessions are as engaging as possible for children in order for them to progress faster.
He said: "I offered advice on how to make the sessions fun, which keeps children interested.

Coaches should be careful not to give too much information, otherwise the youngsters will feel overwhelmed and lose interest."

With Mulgrew's knowledge to draw upon, clubs in Mid Argyll will be better in a better position to deliver ClubGolf coaching come the start of the golf season in spring.
Mulgrew (South West, West and Argyll & Dumbartonshire) was appointed as one of four Coach Developers earlier this year, alongside Allan Martin (Central, Tayside & Fife and Highlands & Islands), Ryan Scott (East) and Keil Beveridge (Grampian).

Funded jointly by ClubGolf and Ryder Cup Europe, their remit is to develop the skills and knowledge across Scotland's vast volunteer workforce to raise the bar in quality coaching delivered to young and aspiring golfers.

Over the next three years, each Coach Developer will travel the length and breadth of his region, visiting clubs to offer support through a range of methods.

Recognising the importance of Mulgrew's visit to Argyllshire, ClubGolf Manager Jackie Davidson said: "We want to increase the amount of hands-on advice and guidance to encourage coaches to continue to develop their skills and to re-energize the programme.

"The Coach Developers will go some way in helping us to achieve this objective and we hope more clubs can benefit from visits like John's in order to improve their coaching."
